Saying Goodbye to Summer
It was a wonderful summer in Maine! And, now, the predictable feelings of change and looking ahead at what the quiet seasons of Fall and Winter will bring. That’s beautiful too.
“You Just Gotta Laugh”
“I never would have made it if I could not have laughed. It lifted me momentarily out of this horrible situation, just enough to make it livable.” -Viktor Frankl
Don’t you just hate it when you’re really having a bad day, or maybe a bad few days, and somebody trying to help says, “Oh, you just need to laugh?” Or, worse, those memes or posters with that ridiculous cat hanging over the edge of a shelf, and words below…”Hang in there!”?
Today, I had a “moment” and I was reminded of my own craziness. That made me laugh and I suddenly noticed, I felt a little better. Here’s hoping that sharing my crazies might make you laugh too.
A beautiful friend stopped by with some flowers for me. She must have known how badly I needed them. She looked a bit tired, and when I asked her about it, she said it was the scrubbing she’d done all day to the rock foundation in her shower. Boy, that lit a fire under me and it seemed as if it had come out of nowhere.
“Do you have one of those glass walled showers?” “Yes”, she answered. And that was all I needed. I was off and running…
“I HATE those showers!” I screeched. “Do you have a squeegie that you have to use after you finish so you can clean all that glass?” “Yep”, she said.
I felt like a runaway train. I could not stop
…”OMG! I don’t get it. I can’t enjoy my shower at a place with a glass shower other than a hotel. All I think about the whole time I’m in there is having to squeegie the damn thing, dripping wet while I go from that warm, steamy, fabulous place to feeling like a Polar bear. I actually start thinking of cheating if I’m at someone’s house with one of those showers.”
“I think, ‘Will they be mad at me if I don’t clean it?’ And what about people that put a note on the wall where the squeegie goes, saying something like, ‘Don’t forget! LOL’? When that happens, I really lose it!”
My friend began to laugh, even though her hands from scrubbing the rock floors were still hurting. And I laughed at myself, just hearing the ardent fervor of my HATING glass showers. We both felt so much better and the day was brighter somehow.
I still say it’s OK to just be like Eyore when you need to do that. I would encourage you to stick your tongue out at any of those posters that tell you otherwise. And, you have my permission to cheat on occasions when you just can’t give up that steamy, relaxing feeling to clean your own, or maybe even a friend’s shower walls.
When your sanity has returned, ask yourself if it might be a good idea to watch a funny movie or TV show so when it feels like the bottom fell out of the world, there’s hope. No kidding… not to quote a poster, but laughter is great medicine, especially when it’s at our sweet human selves.
